ista VerbrauchsDatenMonitoring: Enhancing Energy Efficiency
Only those who know their energy consumption can reduce it sustainably!
Only those who know their energy consumption can reduce it sustainably!
We’ve been developing ista’s Consumption Data Monitoring (VDM) web application in partnership with BTM since 2014. VDM empowers ista’s customers – both tenants and property managers – with the ability to view, analyse, and act on their consumption data. This tailored approach provides specialised tools for both user groups.
ista operates as an consumption meter reader, offering cost billing and analysis for water and heating, consumption, and transparency services. ista is dedicated to enhancing the sustainable value of buildings for both residents and owners.

ista had consumption data but needed an efficient way to visualise it. The challenge was to analyse the consumption they were already collecting from the smart meters in various buildings. Their aim was not only to display this data but also to provide clear insights for both tenants and property managers.
The key challenge was to extract, integrate, and present data from ista’s existing core systems seamlessly. Ensuring the smooth execution of asynchronous background processes, handling a large volume of data, and designing a user-friendly interface were significant technical hurdles.
Phiva, in partnership with BTM, developed the VDM web application. VDM integrates data from ista’s core systems and smart meter readings through an API. The application ensures the effective management of background processes and presents data in an intuitive, user-friendly interface. With VDM, both tenants and property managers can now access, visualise, and analyse their general consumption data easily.
Further information about the product itself can be viewed directly on the ista website: https://www.ista.com/at/dienstleistungen/verbrauchsdatenmonitoring/
The backend of the web application is written in the PHP framework Laravel, the frontend in JavaScript framework. Many processes run asynchronously in the background, a queue takes care of the processes. While the design itself requires more modern design patterns, which are part of an ongoing process, the technology behind it is mostly up-to-date.
Monthly consumption data is directly imported from the company’s core system via an API. The SmartMeter data is imported from the network operators via the Energiewirtschaftlichen Datenaustausch (EDA) (standardised energy industry data exchange).
